After all, the xDSL coverage at the completion of the RBI project IS going to be pretty impressive (I’ve been studying the five year cabinet list, and it’s actually pretty decent). Chorus is (I predict) going to exceed the RBI programme by upgrading more cabinets beyond the list, as it’s in their interest to close the gaps of which there won’t be many. The really interesting part, and the tell-tale sign – is what happens when LTE enters the picture. The specs I’ve seen show it can deliver some pretty impressive bandwidth, and whether or not Vodafone choose to exploit that will be the indication of whether or not they are serious about having a decent slice of the rural pie.

The semantics here are tricky. It’s my belief that the services will be limited to a maximum of 5mbps. I don’t believe any service on offer this year will allow speeds greater than 5mbps. I could be wrong!

contract says: a broadband service with minimum peak speeds of 5Mbps downlink

Elaboration?

However, I was told by Vodafone today that when a user reaches its cap an option to buy an extra 5GB for $20 will be offered. This will allow users to decide to buy more or wait and pay the higher price – remember allowances don’t rollover.

The Vodafone retail plans described here http://www.vodafone.co.nz/broadband/wireless/broadband-and-calling/ indicate that overage fees will be $30/gig. I’ve taken a screenshot of that page in case it changes in the future: http://db.tt/HPqzgI8O
